The Vicar General of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala, the Rt Rev Msgr Charles Kasibante has asked parents and teachers to identify the talents of their children and subsequently help them to develop them. He singled out the performing arts (music, dance, drama, and poetry) as some of the lucrative talents that teachers and parents needed to identify and nurture in their children.
The Prelate made the remarks during a students’ prayer contest organized by Holy Cross Family Ministries at the organization’s premises in Nsambya on Saturday. The contest, Try prayer, it works, attracted students from Catholic faith-based secondary schools like Saint Augustine College Wakiso, which won the championship with 216 points. Other participants included Saint Balikuddembe Mitala Maria Secondary School (first runner-up, 200 points), Our Lady Queen of Africa Girls SSS, Rubaga, St Joseph’s SSS, Nsambya, Our Lady of Africa SS, Namiryango, St Joseph’s SSS, Naggalama, Mount of Olives College, Kakiri, St Kalemba SSS, Nazigo and Seeta High School, Mukono.
Msgr Kasibante called on more schools to participate in the future editions of the competition, which he said enabled the students to develop their talents and subsequently use them for personal survival and development. The Director of Holy Cross Family Ministry in East Africa, Fr Leonard Olobo (CSC) said that the major aim of the contest was to promote Evangelisation and prayer devotion in schools and families.
He asked the headteachers to entice their students to love and participate in the contest. The schools competed in religious poetry, music, dance and drama on the theme: Mary, the New Eve. Individual students who excelled in various items were recognized with presents.
